Many canine breeds are seen with eye problems related to inherited facial abnormalities. These have been bred into particular breeds in some cases intentionally, and in others have simply accompanies some other trait considered desirable for the breed. ‘This is unfortunate for the animal since it may develop painful or even blinding ocular disease as a whim of fashion!
Types of Eyelid Disease Corrected Surgically:
Entropion- inward rolling of lids against the cornea
Ectropion – outward rolling and sagging of the eyelids
Overly large eyelid fissure with exposed eyeball
Eyelid agenesis – failure of part of the eyelid to develop properly in utero leaving the cornea exposed
Abnormal hairs in the eyelid rubbing the cornea
Injuries and scarring of the eyelid
Scarring of the eyelids and conjunctiva in cats with herpesvirus infection
Removal and cryosurgery for eyelid tumors
