Equine Ophthalmology

We make “house” (barn/clinic) calls to examine horses with eye problems. These can be requested by the referring veterinarian or the owner of the animal. We can examine horses for a range of ocular disorders including:

  • Vision and behavioral problems
  • Ocular injuries
  • Corneal ulceration
  • Recurrent uveitis (periodic ophthalmic)
  • Cataracts
  • Glaucoma
  • Retinal degeneration and detachment

We prefer to examine horses at a veterinary facility wherever possible however we will occasionally visit a horse at your barn or home provided there are facilities to adequately restrain the horse.

Many horses require sedation and eyelid nerve blocks to effectively examine the eye. We recommend keeping the animal out of direct sunlight for several hours after the examination if the pupil is dilated.

If surgical procedures are required we may have you bring the animal to the College of Veterinary Medicine at Texas A&M University where we have excellent facilities for equine ophthalmic surgery. Examples of surgical procedures we can perform include:

  • Cataract surgery
  • Corneal laceration repair
  • Corneal grafting for corneal ulcers
  • Eyelid injury repair
  • Removal of ocular and eyelid tumors
  • Drainage implant surgery for glaucoma
  • Laser surgery for glaucoma
  • Cyclosporine implant surgery for recurrent uveitis
