Corneal Surgery

Microsurgery of the cornea is frequently performed in ophthalmic practice. The cornea is very thin (about 1mm) and delicate. Great care has to be taken not to damage its inner or outer surface and repair of corneal lesions is quite exacting. Inexperienced or inexact surgery to the cornea can result in sight threatening scarring.

All corneal surgery is performed with an operating microscope for magnification. Instrumentation is very delicate and designed for just this task. Suture materials are a fraction the size of any used in everyday veterinary practice

Surgeries we perform on the cornea include:

  • Corneal laceration repair
  • Sliding grafts for deep corneal ulcers
  • Conjunctival pedicle grafts for corneal ulcers
  • Synthetic support matrix grafts for deep corneal ulcers
  • Lamellar or penetrating corneal grafts for corneal infections (fungal infections)
  • Reduction of conjunctival scarring in feline herpesvirus infections
  • Epithelial debriding and grid keratotomies for superficial non-healing corneal ulcerations
  • Superficial keratectomy of cornea tumors, sequestra in cats and dermoids in young animals
